St. Nicholas, Patron Saint of Children, Bakers, Brides and Spinsters
Nicholas was Bishop of Myra in Turkey. He knew of three young woman who were going to have to live a life of prostitution because their father could not afford a dowry. One night Nicholas threw a bag of gold through their bedroom window and saved them from this life of shame. During a famine he miraculously provided bread for the poor. Also, during the same famine he was walking by a butcher shop that had meat in the window. He went into the shop. There he found three little boys and saved them from the butcher knife.
"Oh man of great heart and compassion, you saved so many who could not help themselves. Watch over all of us – especially children."
