He ran toward her and was saved from the bandits. After that, she became known as the Madonna del Ghisallo, Patroness of Travelers.
The Giro Lombardia bicycle race runs past where the Madonna appeared. In 1949, a local priest asked the pope to make her the patroness of cyclists.
