Sea Turtle Hatchlings begin life in an egg, which they must break through with a small egg tooth. From there, they wait until the cover of darkness to make a mad dash for the relative safety of the sea. Once in the water, they continue swimming until they reach deeper waters.
History: Turtles first appear in the fossil record alongside the earliest dinosaurs in the Triassic period, around 245 million years ago. Dinosaurs have been extinct for 65 million years, but turtles live all over the planet, on land and sea, having survived several major mass extinctions.
